Independent standards and reassurance

Proud to be SAIF inspected

When a family places someone they love into our care, trust matters. Our membership of SAIF means we voluntarily work within an established Code of Practice and submit to independent quality assurance inspection.

What is SAIF?

An independent standard families can recognise

SAIF is the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors. It was established to support independent funeral businesses and to promote professional standards within the funeral profession.

For families, membership provides another layer of reassurance. SAIF requires member businesses to meet membership conditions, follow its Code of Practice and take part in its Quality Assurance Programme.

That means the SAIF badge is not simply a logo. It represents a commitment to standards, inspection and accountability.

Why this matters to us We believe families should be able to see that the funeral director they choose is prepared to have its standards independently assessed, rather than relying on reputation alone.
Quality assurance

What does a SAIF inspection mean?

SAIF funeral businesses are assessed against its Code of Practice through a Quality Assurance Programme. The purpose is to check that agreed standards are being maintained in practice, not simply promised on a website.

01

Standards are documented

SAIF's Code of Practice sets out expectations for member funeral directors and provides a consistent professional framework.

02

Businesses are inspected

SAIF states that its member funeral businesses are inspected against the Code of Practice on a regular basis to help ensure standards are upheld.

03

Quality is reviewed

The inspection process forms part of SAIF's Quality Assurance Programme, giving families an external point of reference when choosing a funeral director.

04

There is accountability

SAIF membership also provides access to an established complaints and dispute-resolution process if a family remains unhappy after raising concerns with the funeral director.

What the standards support

Reassurance at the points that matter most

A funeral involves care, trust, documentation, communication and many practical arrangements. SAIF's standards are designed to support good professional practice across the funeral service.

Care and dignity

Standards relating to the respectful and professional care of the person who has died.

Suitable premises

SAIF membership conditions include requirements around suitable funeral premises and a sound trading history.

Clear information

Professional administration, clear communication and appropriate documentation all form part of responsible funeral directing.

Funeral arrangements

Families should be supported professionally as choices are discussed, recorded and carried through into the funeral itself.

Ashes and records

SAIF has specifically highlighted standards around the return of ashes and the accurate handling of funeral administration.

Complaints and redress

Families have a recognised route for escalating a complaint if it cannot be satisfactorily resolved with the funeral director.

Consumer protection

What happens if something goes wrong?

Good funeral care depends on trust, but it is also important that families know there is a clear route to raise concerns. SAIF provides an additional complaints and Alternative Dispute Resolution framework for clients of member firms.

A clear two-stage process

SAIF asks families to give the funeral director the opportunity to resolve a complaint first. If the response does not resolve the concern, the matter can then be referred to SAIF's Professional Standards process.

1
Raise the concern with usWe will listen, investigate and work with the family to try to put matters right.
2
Independent escalation through SAIFIf the family remains dissatisfied, SAIF provides a formal route for the complaint to be considered further.
Independent information

Our approach

Standards should support personal care, not replace it

Inspection gives families reassurance about professional standards. The funeral itself should still feel personal, individual and shaped around the person who has died. For us, the two belong together: consistent professional care behind the scenes and genuine flexibility for each family.

  • Clear, honest information when you are making decisions.
  • Respectful care of your loved one throughout their time with us.
  • Funeral arrangements shaped around your family's wishes and beliefs.
  • A local team that remains accountable for the service it provides.
  • A recognised external standards framework through SAIF membership.
Common questions

SAIF inspection explained

What does SAIF stand for?

SAIF is the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors, a trade association representing independent funeral directors and promoting professional standards within the profession.

Is SAIF membership just a subscription?

No. SAIF describes stringent conditions for funeral director membership, including suitable premises, and requires member businesses to work to its Code of Practice and take part in its Quality Assurance inspection programme.

Are SAIF members inspected?

Yes. SAIF states that member funeral businesses are inspected against its Code of Practice on a regular basis. Its Quality Assurance Programme has ISO 9001 certification.

Does SAIF membership mean every funeral is the same?

No. Professional standards provide the framework for how a funeral director operates. The funeral service itself can still be highly personal and tailored to the family's wishes, beliefs and choices.

Can I check whether a funeral director is a SAIF member?

Yes. SAIF provides a public member search on its website so families can check membership directly.

What if I have a complaint?

You should first give the funeral director the opportunity to investigate and respond. If you remain dissatisfied, SAIF provides a formal complaints and Alternative Dispute Resolution process for clients of member firms.
